Definition of algorithmic colonialism

Algorithmic colonialism is a phenomenon where Western tech monopolies seek to
control and dominate social, political, and cultural discourse in less developed
countries through algorithmic advancements. These companies are motivated by
corporate profits and agendas.

Implications of commitment to algorithmic colonialism

Let’s take Africa as an example. AI developed in the West is unsuited for African issues.
The algorithmic takeover of the West also impacts the development of local products,
making the continent reliant on the West. They establish their ecosystems without
seeking consent. As the Western monopolies have a lot more power and influence, the
less-developed countries barely stand a chance.
The advancement of AI technology in Africa is not necessarily a bad thing; however, the
capitalistic intentions of these monopolies are concerning. They impose harmful values
and interests while stifling approaches that do not align with their values. What is at
stake is the freedom of less-developed countries and their opportunity to grow. They
cannot keep up with the pace of modern technology.

Societal transformations required for addressing concern raised by algorithmic

colonialism

Individual rights should be established and guarded. This can be done through guidelines and safeguards to maintain these rights. This will make it more difficult for monopolies to misuse their power by forcing their own products onto others. And simultaneously, there will be space for local enterprises to develop their own products. Furthermore, it is crucial to prioritize the needs of local communities over those of Western monopolies. Governments should make it easier for local communities to thrive. Western technology should only be permitted to enter less developed nations if
Western businesses also invest back into the communities there. Given the undeniable influence of the West, it would be preferable to use that power for good.
